Real-world problems often demand interdisciplinary solutions. I was inspired by the problem of nuclear waste “disposal,” and the ethical imperative for people today to communicate the danger of our buried waste to people up to 10,000 years from now (the toxic lifespan of buried nuclear waste). I was uninspired by the Department of Energy’s proposed warning systems and have used this real-world problem as a jumping off point for interdisciplinary collaborations between artists, scientists, environmentalists, and linguists, and as a prompt for art and design students to reconsider the mechanics of communication.
