Winter Wheat

Glassbox, Seattle, WA, 2015

Winter Wheat brings together parallel bodies of work around ideas of monoculture and environmental manipulation.

Works in the show include continuations of long term projects such as The Occupations of Uninhabited Space--gourds grown into welded steel sculptures--as well as new works that use industrial units (caulk tubes and spray foam cans) as the seeds for playful diversities. In addition, a new sound installation uses machine translation and the Sedōka poetic format to create strange linguistic occurrences and other composites.

Whereas rule based systems are often linked with monocultures, much of Rhee's interest and work engages with rules in order to find leaks, slippages and mutations.
